Three hurt when car crashes on Highway 86

Kathy Orr/Baker City Herald: A rescue worker used a hydraulic 'jaws of life' tool to extricate a passenger from a car that crashed on Highway 86 just east of Baker City around noon today.

Three people were hurt about noon today when their car careened off a steep embankment on Highway 86 about three miles east of Baker City.

The accident happened at a corner on the lower part of Flagstaff Hill, near the highway intersection with Sunnyslope Road and the Grey Eagle Mine Road.

Rescue crews used a hydraulic 'jaws of life' tool to extricate at least one of the passengers from the car.

Names of the driver and passengers, and their conditions, were not available this afternoon. 


County commissioners meet with Forest Service officials

Representatives fron the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest met with the Baker County commissioners Wednesday to discuss the county’s coordination with the federal agency. 

Recently there has been friction between the two government entities.


New principals picked

Oregon’s 2013 Teacher of the Year will lead South Baker Intermediate School as principal in the coming year and a South Baker sixth-grade teacher has been named Baker Middle School principal.

Nanette Lehman has been hired to replace Betty Palmer at South Baker and Chris Carmiencke has been named Baker Middle School principal to replace Mindi Vaughan, who will transfer to the Haines principal position next year.


County bans pot sales

At a special meeting today Baker County Commissioners adopted an ordinance that prohibits the commercial sales of marijuana in all unincorporated areas of the county.
