Birthplace of Wally Byam

Maybe you knew the story of Wally Byam.

And maybe it's something of a stretch to connect the creator of Airstream trailers to his birthplace, Baker City, since he moved away at age 9.

But we don't think so.

There are legions of Airstream enthusiasts, fans not just of the trailer but also the lifestyle Byam espoused.

And Baker County is premium travel-trailer country, with some top-notch public and private campgrounds and RV parks and plenty of tourist attractions.

Including Byam's birthplace, apparently.

That's why we're excited to see the display at the Oregon Trail Regional Museum, and why we have to smile when we hear about a customer pulling into a Baker City RV and asking where Byam lived.

His contribution to Americana is now cemented.

Baker City should simultaneously honor and benefit from that reputation by publicly noting that this is his birthplace.
