Hail who?

We had been 99.9 percent certain that anyone who honors Adolf Hitler must, in the manner of a toddler, lack a certain intellectual vigor.

That is until last week, when some moron with a hunk of chalk supplied the one-tenth of a percent we were short.

This person — or perhaps persons; the vandal probably needed help with difficult tasks such as opening the chalk container — scrawled several hateful slogans on the blacktop at Baker Sanitary Service’s Recycling Center at 12th and Campbell streets.

Among these homages to white supremacy, mass murder and genocide, one epitomizes the idiocy of the entire gesture.

The slogan: “Hail Hitler.”

Now we can’t claim to have read every one of the millions of words that have been written about Hitler.

But we have read a fair amount about him, and although the tribute “Heil Hitler!” appears frequently in the historical record, we don’t recall any references to the dictator’s interest in frozen precipitation.

The cretins did, to their credit, spell Hitler right.

A brief rain shower or a splash from a garden hose will suffice to erase this bit of ugliness, of course.

Unfortunately, the real and evil legacy of Hitler persists more than half a century after his death.

We feel better knowing, though, that the microscopic fraction of the population that even now treats Hitler as a hero is so ignorant, not only of history but of spelling, that they can’t even get the salute right.
