It's Time To Build A New Recovery Village
|
Count us among those rooting for New Directions Northwest to succeed in its campaign to raise $1.75 million to build a new Recovery Village. That's a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility in Baker City for women and children. The current Recovery Village, on Resort Street, has a litany of problems, according to New Directions Northwest. The Resort Street facility is aging and needs frequent maintenance. It's a multi-story building with no elevator, and its basement could be a dangerous trap in case of fire. The new Recovery Village, which would be built on Midway Drive near New Directions' other treatment centers, would have a single story, and more space. It's also closer to St. Elizabeth Hospital, the Baker County Health Department and dental offices that Recovery Village clients use. Although Recovery Village is not a heavily publicized part of New Directions' work, it is vital part. The clients at Recovery Village are women from all parts of Oregon who are trying to overcome drug and alcohol addictions while raising their children. Few groups of clients are more vulnerable that this one. New Directions needs the best facility possible to house these families while they recover and, we hope, eventually prosper. |
