Let's use schools we already own
To the editor:
A remodel of our structurally sound Central building provides a light, airy, modern, up to code in every way, handicap accessible school for around $17.4 million. According to architect Poe's plan, this school would easily accommodate the present 6th, 7th and 8th grade population with classroom space left over. The addition of a new gym to the Central building would add an estimated $3.4 million but even adding that cost, the remodel would still be under the present $21 million estimate for a new school.
This would leave the Helen M. Stack building available for student growth, should it occur. The gym at the Stack building could continue to be used also, giving us two gyms.
We own the land and these buildings already, the cost is less, the benefits are enormous. Let's use what we have!
In addition, a problem yet to be addressed is the badly needed maintenance of our existing primary schools. These needs will have to be met, yet there is no provision in the present bond measure for them.
