Bill a sign of moral bankruptcy To the editor: Oregon House Bill 2598 will authorize and fund embryonic stem cell research, though it prohibits the cloning of human beings. However, Oregon statute defines a human being as a person who has been born. Thus, the bill actually authorizes anyone to clone a “person” and nurture it inside a woman’s womb up to the moment its birth becomes imminent or, as technology allows, to nurture it to any age outside of a woman’s womb, and then to kill it by any means for whatever “research” purpose the person desires. All of this is subject to the oversight of a board but, of course, all you need to do is get the right people on the board. Incredibly, Section 15 of the Bill states: “This 2009 Act being necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health and safety, an emergency is declared to exist. . .” I don’t know, but this seems somewhat reminiscent of the line of reasoning employed by Hitler and Dr. Mengele, who also firmly believed they were working for the greater benefit of mankind. On a similar note: During one of the presidential debates, Mr. Obama made the statement that determining when a human fetus becomes a human being was “above my pay grade.” In so stating, Mr. Obama was declaring that he did not believe he would have the authority, even as president, to support the killing of human fetuses at will. And yet, one of the very first things he did as president was to re-authorize the use of Treasury funds to support just that in foreign countries. Altogether, I think this illustrates the moral ineptitude, if not bankruptcy, of the liberal left. But I guess it only matters if there is even the remotest chance that a God who judges the actions of people and nations really exists. So, as famously stated in a “Dirty Harry” movie, it all boils down to whether or not you feel lucky. Well, Mr. Obama and Oregon Democrats. . . do you? As you might ponder this (though I doubt you will), remember that your opinions on these matters could well affect us all. Marc Todd Baker City |
