Inmates are loved and missed, too To the editor: I just wanted to thank you for printing my letter last month on the lack of recognition to the prisoners at the Powder River Correctional Facility and in doing so giving them the recognition they deserve. My husband sent me the newspaper clipping, and was grateful. I hope that the Baker City area knows that just because they are prisoners, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t very loving, caring people, and I can tell you that my husband is just that. And I can’t begin to tell you how many people he’s helped in his life, or how many lives he’s made better in one way or another. He has children who love and miss him, and a wife that adores him, as do many of the inmates around the globe. So please let me take this opportunity to wish them all a merry Christmas and to tell the one I love we’ll all be having Christmas when he comes home. Thank you. Beth Blain Eugene
To the editor: We would just like to say thanks to Michelle Owen and Jake Jones for coming to our school to talk to us about our watershed and Baker City water system. We learned a lot about our watershed because of them. We also got information to complete our Social Studies assignment. Baker City is lucky to have pure water and responsible people who watch over the system. Shaun Lepley 2nd quarter president Mrs. Smith’s sixth-grade class South Baker Intermediate School
Baker took care of my family To the editor: Last Saturday my wife and daughter were headed home from a funeral in Boise. Outside Ontario they hit a patch of ice, bounced across 84 West from guardrail to center divider and back to the guardrail. No serious injuries. The Baker City tow truck operator took them directly to Les Schwab thinking they might be of assistance (no extra charges, just used our AAA). They were able to address the problem and fixed it Monday. The lady at the Les Schwab desk gave them a lift to the Best Western where they were given a reduced rate. The tow operator found my daughter's gloves and drove back to return them to her. Now I know ’tis the season, but just what kind of wonderful town do you folks have over there? I suspect it’s who you are, maybe a little Christmas spirit just for good measure. Thank you so much for taking care of my family. All are home safe and sound. Merry Christmas to all. Thomas Boerke Camas, Wash.
Time to tell government: ‘stop’ To the editor: Just read some of the blurb about the miners in Eastern Oregon. Isn't it about time people step in and say stop to all the government intervention in our lives? Can't log, can't fish, can't mine, can't drive cars, global warming, yeah, right. . . Just another way for the environmental community to get government money which we give to the government to start with. Then they give it to the environmental community and then they use it against us. How come they (the environmental community) can sue the government for letting the logging, fishing take place but we can't sue the government for not logging and fishing and. . . ?
