Walden stands up to Obama To the editor: Thank you, Representative Greg Walden, for standing up to the Obama Administration and its supporters who would like nothing better than to take total control of our nation’s health care system. To those who don’t know or understand, it is not the insurance companies or the conservatives that have caused the large premiums to our health care. Each state government has taken it upon themselves to remove competition by not allowing insurance companies to sell policies across state lines. By doing this we all would have more options to choose from just like we do with life and liability insurance. Another great place to decrease health care costs would be installing limits on lawsuits called — tort reform. These two improvements to our system could be done at no cost to taxpayers and would greatly lower costs to all health care. But you will not see this because the leadership in both state and federal government want total control over our lives. It is disappointing, but all of us need to educate our elected officials of the Constitution and the fact that there is no language that allows our government to mandate by law that citizens buy any health insurance. In closing, I will not only vote for Greg Walden again, but I will do everything in my power to support him. Bill Harvey Baker City
To the editor: I witnessed a miracle yesterday. Following the van rollover on I-84, I watched my fellow team members at St. Elizabeth’s work endlessly to attend to the needs of the crash victims. I watched people do things they didn’t know they could do. I watched doctors and nurses pray with patients. I watched as a community came together to help the victims. Employees took it upon themselves to help get clothing, prescriptions, food and emotional comfort to strangers in need. I watched as members of the Nazarene church came to minister to these young people. I watched as local business donated food. I watched as our community came together as one. All acts of true giving. I’ve been asked how you can live in such a small town? I tell them, I couldn’t live anywhere else. Patti Burrows Baker City
To the editor: Early Thursday morning there was a horrible car accident on I-84. Including 15 passengers with 14 out of the 15 passengers being ejected from the vehicle. Not knowing much of the details nor the outcome, please know that my heart goes out to the victims and their families and that my prayers are with them. My husband was one who was called into the hospital to assist with this accident. And learning much later how many more doctors, nurses, lab, X-ray and additional staff came in, pulled together, ready on their feet to give these victims the best treatment and care. Even the hospital cafeteria provided free meals for the staff. I want to thank all these people for their willingness to be ready to serve when there is such a need. It’s these kind of people and their dedication and service that makes our community and our little hospital so great. And I for one am grateful. Shelly R. Wilson Baker City |
