How paper, state furloughs differ To the editor: The difference between furlough days and publishing the newspaper three days a week. In response to Richard Nase letter to the editor Oct. 26. The difference is that state employees do not get paid. The paper still gets paid plus some, remember they raised the fee about the same time they went from five to three days a week. To the editor: After reading the city employees’ letter stating they aren’t for sale, makes me think I might have had the wrong opinion of them when I wrote in my Oct. 13 letter to the editor (which accidentally went in under my wife’s name) I stated that “Brocato’s support came from those who benefitted financially while under his reign.” Forgive me, how dastardly of me, although figures show you did receive huge raises, I should have known that you supported him because you perceived his superior leadership abilities in the fact that he recognized all of your equally superior leadership abilities. Give me a break! Please remember this, you work for us! You work under the leadership of a city manager who works under the direction of a City Council. If his leadership capabilities are so limited that he can’t manage to get their cooperation, he needs to go. As Mr. Doug Darlington implied in his letter, you city employees have the best jobs in the county. If you don’t like our system of government, find another job. George Wilder Baker City
To the editor: Thank you, Eastern Oregon, for several wonderful days based out of the Geiser Grand in Baker City. The great stretches of golden range, the mountain peaks and passes with blinding light and sudden cold winds and the flashing cottonwoods tracing the winding river valleys all allowed us access, at least for a time, to a calming sense of wonder and fragility and tranquility that is so far removed from the life that most Oregonians live these days. Special thanks to the gentleman with the party (pickup, plus pickup and travel trailer) who came to the aid of the city folk with a steel chain that yanked our black Forester bucking and twisting out of a ditch on the road around the mountain from Halfway to Joseph around noon, Sunday, Oct. 11. This guy can borrow my pliers any time. You all seem like such good people, and we’ll be back, we can promise you that — whether you like it or not! Carol Pelosi Colin Penno Tigard |
