Kerns the right choice for seniors

To the editor:

Baker County seniors and disabled, be aware that Tim Kerns is our Baker County commissioner representative on the board of directors of community Connection of Northeast Oregon Inc. Tim has been very diligent in attending the board meetings and has been an outstanding director in representing the programs administered by Community Connection.

The Baker County commissioners have been very supportive of the senior and disabled programs, so to continue this support I ask that you vote to retain Tim Kerns as Baker County commissioner.

Joseph will work for us every day

To the editor:

The reason we’re voting for Randy Joseph for County Commissioner is that he knows about alternative energy and has plans bring jobs to Baker County. He will work for us every day, keeping in mind our needs as he prioritizes the budget. There will be transparency in every decision he makes: He is a very honest person.

We urge you to join us and cast your vote for Randy Joseph.

Obama on wrong side of issues

To the editor:

Sen. Barack Obama claims to be a Christian. However, if that were true he wouldn’t be supporting issues that contradict God’s holy word. For by doing so he is treading on dangerous ground.

I strongly fear for America’s future if Sen. Obama becomes president. Sen. Obama has revealed his true character and beliefs by ignoring some of the basic teachings of the Christian faith.

One is to value human life, which he doesn’t by his support of abortion. The other is that he denies the marriage union between one man and one woman only, which is a holy union instituted by God.

As for human cloning, only God has the authority to create man, who is created in his own image. Man could only create a “thing.”

Sen. Obama fails to understand that the most high God rules in the kingdoms of men and he gives that kingdom or nation to be ruled by whomever he wishes. In return, that ruler is to honor and obey him or suffer the consequences. Considering Sen. Obama’s questionable stand on moral issues, he most definitely should not be president.

Kerns’ experience very valuable

Tim Kerns has served Baker County residents very well over the past eight years as our county commissioner. He has demonstrated a calm steadying influence on all issues, keeping the system of checks and balances working in our county government.

He firmly embraces a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Tim will continue to work for all of us in Baker County.

There is absolutely no substitute for his eight years’ experience as our Baker County commissioner. Please join me and support Tim Kerns with your vote for Baker County Commissioner, Position 1.

Joseph has skills, integrity

To the editor:

It is the season for campaigning and a constant theme in signs, commercials, and speeches has been the need for “change.”

While the focus has been on the Presidency, Senate and Congressional races and state offices, the same can be said about county government. Decisions and actions taken by our County Commission will have more immediate impact on us than those made on the other side of the continent — or state for that matter. 

The County Commission makes decisions regarding county zoning, planning, economic development, health care, public safety, etc. that affect our daily lives. Commissioners should reach out to the community for input and expertise, ensure transparency in public deliberations, and accountability for all county services and transactions. 

We support Randy Joseph for County Commissioner because he has the skills and integrity to meet the challenges of governing Baker County. He has served as Chair on the Baker County Planning Commission and Renewable Energy Committee – both key areas in our County. In his personal capacity and as an appointed official Randy has promoted renewable energy-related development in the county: wind power, hydro power and wood chip/pellet production, in a manner that promotes local investment and employment. 

In the past month we have heard Randy respond to many questions posed by a cross section of our county.  His responses exemplify an openness and transparency, which are characteristics we find lacking in the current Commission. That is why we endorse Randy Joseph for County Commission.  

Bonebrake for City Council

To the editor:

We have a number of qualified candidates running for Baker City Council this year. One in particular is Aletha Bonebrake. Through the years I have watched Aletha and her dream of an exceptional library for Baker City and County. Aletha has spent untold hours making her dream come true and Baker County indeed has benefited of one the finest libraries in Oregon, she has as well modernized and upgraded the libraries in outlying towns in Baker County.

The Baker County Bookmobile is a success bringing reading material to rural areas in Baker County. The Baker County Library has also made available computer rooms for youth and adults to use safely.

Try and give Aletha credit for the library and her forceful answer will be, I did not do it alone, it was a successful effort by many hands, dedicated employees and volunteers. With Aletha’s known background of honesty, planning, thoughtfulness, vision and valuable insight Baker City can be nothing but be the better for it.
