Letters to the Editor for Sept. 30, 2009

Another Bulldog played at OSU

To the editor:

Mr. (Grant) Johnson was a great athlete from Baker High School and now I’m sure will be great at Oregon State University.

Back in 1941 there was another tremendous football player from Baker High School who played football for Oregon State University. He is Martin Chaves and he also played on the line. Oregon State had earned the right to play in the Rose Bowl that season. World War II had just broken out so they decided to move the game to the East Coast. The game was played at Duke University in Durham, N.C. It was called the transplanted Rose Bowl. Oregon State won the game and Martin Chaves was made captain of that game.

I remember that game very vividly. The city of Baker was also proud of that Oregon State football player from Baker High School.

A great field trip for South Baker

To the editor:

We would like to give a special thank you to Albertsons for donating grocery bags. We thank Settler’s Park people for coming all the way to our school and inviting us to their home for bingo. We can’t forget the Baker City Trolley for letting us ride free on our field trip.

These people are great and very special to our community. So, let’s appreciate them in every way.

‘No’ only sensible vote on recall

To the editor:

I have lived in Baker City all my life and for 32 years was secretary for the County Extension Office and have seen good and bad city managers come and go.

Your comments and Peggi Timm’s express my opinion and that of the majority. A “No” vote on recall is the only sensible vote, and the only way to stop the pettiness we now see in the City Hall is for the three disgruntled councilors to resign.

Give American back its liberties

To the editor:

The Patriots Act flies in the face of liberty and justice for all. All of America knows this, you know this, our Constitution guarantees against this injustice. Cheney loaded this tyranny onto the back of democracy like a cold blooded predator of peace and tranquility.

Give us back our civil liberties!

Don Puckett
