Don’t let Idaho Power plow over us To the editor: I’m writing to voice my concerns over Idaho Power’s proposed routes through Baker County. With the construction of the 500-kv Boardman-to-Hemingway project, one of the routes is of particular concern. It would bring the 180-foot-tall tower line in direct view of the Interpretive Center. The Interpretive Center has become an educational, historical and economic treasure. I question why we would want to undermine the natural and historical allure we have diligently worked so hard to preserve and build upon. Since the decline of the timber industry we have struggled to maintain our economic strength. Our unspoiled environment and livability have become our strong points. This project will not be an economic boost to our community other than a small percentage of tax revenue. Idaho Power will simply plow its way through Baker County and leave. There will be no family wage jobs generated to offset what we have given up, even if we wanted to justify its unsightly presence. We need to protect and preserve our assets, our lifestyle. I encourage those interested to get educated. The Baker County Public Library has all the information provided by Idaho Power regarding this project. There are also comment forms available, so you too can voice your opinion. These are due by Nov. 14. Let’s not allow Baker County to be the path of least resistance. We don’t want to ask yourselves, years from now, “what have we done?” Anita West Baker County |
