Voters: You can make history To the editor: This year’s presidential election offers an opportunity to be part of history as no previous election has. Our mothers/grandmothers were not even allowed to vote until the 19th amendment was made part of our Constitution in 1920. We’ve come a long way! A woman was a viable candidate in the 2008 primary; she was a serious contender for the presidency. Now we have another historical first with Barack Obama as a candidate for the presidency. It took three amendments for us to get where we are today: the 13th in 1865 to outlaw slavery; the 14th in 1868 to define citizenship as anyone born or naturalized in the U.S. and forbade states to abridge this right. Then in 1870 the 15th which forbade the denial of right to vote on account of race, color, previous condition of servitude. We citizens can bring history a step further by voting for Barack Obama, a gifted scholar with life experiences qualifying him for understanding problems our world faces and with professional and legislative experience qualifying him for making informed decisions.

Baker City Dog owners: Please attach ID tag To the editor: Saturday evening a beautiful young border collie wandered into my neighbor’s yard and began playing with their dog. As the day got darker, we pondered what to do with this stray, yet collared dog. The dogs owner found it prudent to put a collar on their dog, but no tags or ID. I spent an hour Saturday evening and an hour Sunday morning driving around the area looking for the dog’s owner to no avail. If we cannot find the owner we will keep this dog as it is well mannered and very lovable. If this were my dog, I would be heartbroken knowing it was missing. Baker dog owners, if you love your dogs, please, please, please, take the time to get a name tag with a phone number for them. The valley is filled with people like me who will take the time to find the family of a lost dog. P.S.: If someone abandoned this dog because they couldn’t take care of it, you should be ashamed of yourself.
