Letters to the Editor for Dec. 23, 2009

Protest the road closures

To the editor:

The 4,200 miles that the Forest Service is proposing to close in the Wallowa-Whitman forest is the distance to Washington, D.C., and approximately halfway back. How many billions of dollars do you suppose it cost to build this 4,200 miles of road in the forest? Which most have crushed gravel, etc. And now how many millions will it cost to close these roads? How many hundreds of miles has the Forest Service already closed, without any public input, illegally?

To build these roads, in most cases, the Forest Service gave away a big percentage of the price they should have got out of the timber to the timber industry for building these roads.

Baker played against stacked deck

To the editor:

I would like to state very clearly that this is not a case of “sour grapes.” Rather, just an effort to share some not always known information regarding the Baker Bulldogs’ valiant effort at Saturday’s state football championship.

The bottom line is that our kids were playing against a “stacked deck.”

We have had an ever-increasing situation in our state’s districting formats resulting in a huge competitive advantage enjoyed by private over public schools. Basically, under the current rules these schools can recruit athletes from anywhere. Their student-athletes don’t even have to live in their particular school districts.

Abortion is not an abomination

To the editor:

This concerns the recent letter on abortion, in which the authors stated: “Abortion is an abomination upon our society. . .” Abortion is not an abomination; it is a difficult, often emotionally wrenching decision many women feel they must make at some point in their lives. Their individual motives are no one else’s business.

A true abomination occurs whenever someone views themselves as God’s mouthpiece, and sees it as their personal responsibility to be the guardian and judge of others’ behavior.
