Saying it well, in a few words

To the editor:

Iva Mace’s letter in the March 24 Baker City Herald was one of the best items I have seen in the Herald for a long time.  I have to admit, I stop reading some of the editorials and columns after the first few sentences.

She said it well, she said it succinctly.

We need to protect our borders

To the editor:

Re: drug war. The problem is the customers of these drug terrorists, who supply money to keep them in business. The root of the problem is the answer. Bring our troops home to protect OUR borders not someone else’s.

Shame replaces outrage

To the editor:

Earlier I was outraged, but now I am ashamed.

I am ashamed of a candidate who promises transparency, no lobbyists in his administration, and no earmarks, then does not live up to those promises.

I am ashamed of a Congress that is aware of problems existing in the TARP bailout, inserts provisions regarding bonuses in a stimulus package that is not read, then wants to pass a law penalizing bailout recipients who received the bonuses. (They should all read a document called the Constitution of the United States: Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3 on Bills of Attainder.) On top of this, the Congress/Administration hints at a law to restrict salaries of executives of companies not receiving taxpayer monies!

Lead or get out of the way

To the editor:

I, for one, am tired of the obstructionist behavior from the conservatives in this country, both in Congress and outside of Congress. If they are truly indignant over money now being spent on the American public the way it should have been spent these past eight years, then I have to ask them: Where was your voice during the previous administration when our men and women went to a war ill-prepared; without body armor, in jeeps and Humvees not equipped with armor?

Bill would hurt miners, others

To the editor:

Instead of protecting property rights of ranchers who are surface owners on split estate lands, House Bill 3453 in the Oregon Legislature actually weakens Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) regulations, and adds a second state agency, Department of State Lands, to administer mining. This situation will work to confuse the regulations currently in place, and leave the surface owners more vulnerable, not less, to impacts from mining. HB 3453 is not necessary, would be costly to taxpayers, and it is not legal.
