Weed levy crucial

To the editor:

Led by Arnie Grammon, Baker County's weed supervisor, much progress has been made toward controlling noxious weeds in Eagle and Pine valleys, as well as in the rest of the county. However, much work still needs to be done and continued funding of Baker County's Weed District is crucial.

The weed levy currently on the ballot actually represents a decrease per assessed value from 9 cents per $1,000 in 1999 to 8.5 cents per $1,000. Thus there will be no increase in actual dollars going into the Weed District — the funds will remain at $70,000, which was the same amount requested in the 1999 levy. The measure may be passed only at an election with at least 50 percent voter turnout because of the state's double majority requirement.

The Baker County Weed District board of directors feels the proposed weed levy is an appropriate way of fighting weeds in Baker County, and provides sound fiscal management.

To assist in continuing the fight, be sure to vote and don't forget to pick up your free herbicide, which will be given away by the weed district at several locations in the county.
