Why reward 5Jfor mistakes?

To the editor:

The State Fire Marshal declared our Middle School "safe" and in better shape than many schools around the state. The Baker City Herald argues that we should reward the 5J Administration with a $21 million bond because they are unwilling to make simple, economical improvements and continue to care for public assets. If the bond passes, 5J will be authorized to give away a public property worth millions of dollars to a local developer for $250,000, which is less than many new homes in Baker City cost.

A local builder and a California transplant write letters attacking a lifetime local businessman and volunteer who has offered alternatives. Many of us share his opinion that 5J should seek a plan based on declining enrollment and fiscal responsibility, that is, living within our means and making the best use of our resources.

We would scold children that acted this way — not write them a blank check for $21 million — knowing that they will be back to ask for more money for the other buildings that have already been identified as needing improvements.

Vote to maintain all our school buildings and educate all our kids with a No on 34.
