Andrew Bryan will serve as Baker School Board chair in the coming year.

Bryan, former vice chair, was elected during a day-long work session Wednesday.

As the meeting got under way about 8 a.m., the board voted to elect Bryan. There were no other nominations.

Director Kyle Knight cast the lone no vote for Bryan’s election to the seat.

(Richard McKim, who was elected to the board in May, did not attend the meeting because of a work conflict.)

Knight said he could not support Bryan to serve as board chair because he believes a leadership change would be more beneficial.

“You don’t use ‘leadership’ against your opponents,” Knight wrote in an email to the Baker City Herald on Thursday. Knight and Bryan have been on opposing sides of most issues considered by the board during their tenure together on the board.

“I could not vote for a continuation of that leadership style, which has polarized the board the past two years,” Knight stated. “Although in essence we have not changed leadership, I am optimistic about the future.”

Kevin Cassidy, who also was elected to the board in May and was sworn in Wednesday, was chosen as vice chair on a 3-0 vote. Cassidy abstained from voting for himself.

Mark Henderson also attended the work session.

Henderson and Knight are beginning their third year of board service. Bryan, Henderson and Knight were elected to four-year board terms in May 2011 and began serving in July of that year.

Bryan first was appointed to the board in 2010 to fill an unexpired term. He ran for a four-year position in the May 2011 election.
