Anthony Lakes looking to next weekend

This week’s storms weren’t generous enough with their snow to allow Anthony Lakes ski area to open on Thanksgiving weekend.

But things looked promising for a while.

“We had the potential, but the storm didn’t produce as much snow as we hoped,” said Peter Johnson, general manager for the ski area in the Elkhorn Mountains about 34 miles northwest of Baker City.

Temperatures were a bit too warm — the snow briefly turned to rain on Tuesday morning — but by Tuesday afternoon snow was again falling at the day lodge, Johnson said.

On a more optimistic note, the relatively warm temperatures meant the snow has been wetter and heavier than usual for Anthony Lakes, which is renowned for its dry powder.

Wet snow makes for a solid base, Johnson said.

And with colder temperatures forecast for the next several days, he hopes the ski area can open next weekend.

“Another good 12-inch storm and we should be good,” Johnson said.

In the meantime, workers have at times groomed the loop trail around Anthony Lake for Nordic skiing.
