Baker, Burnt River High students qualify for state business skills contest

Baker qualifies in 19 events, and Burnt River students in 4

Baker High School students qualified for state in 19 events and students from Burnt River High School at Unity qualified in four after placing in the top 10 of business skills contests at the 2010 Blue Mountain Regional Skills Conference at La Grande.

The competition included 360 students from Baker, Burnt River, Condon, Elgin, Imbler, Grant Union, Helix, Heppner, La Grande, Ontario, Pendleton, Union, Vale and Nyssa high schools. They competed on the campus of Eastern Oregon University, BHS teacher Toni Zikmund said in a press release. The event also included 22 judges, 16 advisers, and other volunteers.

Only the top 10 finishers qualify for state, but some others may qualify if one of the original 10 decides not to compete in that event at state, Zikmund said.

The Oregon State Business Leadership Conference will be April 7-9 at the Double Tree Hotel, Lloyd Center in Portland on April 7-9.

Finishing in first place in their events at district were Baker High School students Mallory Bailey, Amanda Bailey and the team of Katie Horn, Stacy Duman and Ashley Trees. Burnt River’s Parliamentary Procedure team of Justus Wise, Kristy Riggin, Caleb Andrews and Ellie DeLong also topped that competition.

Mallory Bailey, this year’s Future Business Leaders of America state president, won the Sports Management contest. Her sister, Amanda Bailey, placed first in Computer Applications. And the Baker team of Horn, Duman and Trees finished first in the Global Business division.
