Baker City man accused of shooting his father

A Baker City man, who is accused of shooting his father twice in the head early Sunday morning, is being held at the Baker County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

John M. Guthrie Jr., 38, of 2323 Third St., was arrested about 6 a.m. Sunday, District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff said this morning. Guthrie was scheduled to be arraigned today in Baker County Circuit Court on charges of attempted murder and second-degree assault.

The district attorney said John M. Guthrie Sr., 59, was shot twice in the head at close range shortly after midnight Saturday at his home at 1896 Balm St.

The elder Guthrie was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Services where he was admitted. He has since been released, Shirtcliff said.

The Baker County Major Crime Team, which includes officers from Baker City Police, Oregon State Police and the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, spent the night searching for the younger Guthrie, Shirtcliff said. He was taken into custody without incident at a home in the 2900 block of Elm Street, Shirtcliff said.

Shirtcliff declined to comment on the type of gun involved in the shooting or other details of the crime.

The Major Crime Team is continuing the investigation and the case will be presented to a grand jury later this week, he said.
