A 77-year-old Baker City man died Tuesday evening after his car crossed the centerline of Cedar Street in north Baker City and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Robert Weston, of 1000 Park St., was pronounced dead at St. Alphonsus Medical Center-Baker City, Police Chief Wyn Lohner said.

The accident happened about 6:27 p.m. Tuesday on Cedar Street near G Street.

Although the investigation is continuing, police believe a "medical event" caused Weston to lose control of his 2005 Honda SUV, Lohner said.

"It was just a tragic event," Lohner said.

Weston was driving north on Cedar Street.

His vehicle crashed into a southbound 1999 Chrysler 4-door driven by Jason Sandberg, 34, who lives on Pocahontas Road.

Neither Weston nor Sandberg had a passenger, Lohner said.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to the Baker City hospital.

It's not clear whether Weston died of injuries from the accident, or from the event that precipitated the crash.

Sandberg was later flown to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise with a leg injury, Lohner said.

Sandberg was in serious condition at the Boise hospital this morning.

It's not yet known how fast either car was traveling.

Lohner said an accident reconstructionist from Oregon State Police's Ontario office who worked at the crash scene Tuesday evening will determine speeds and other factors.

Cedar Street was closed for several hours between H and F streets while the reconstruction work was happening.

Lohner said police interviewed one other driver who saw Weston's car cross the centerline of Cedar Street and crash into Sandberg's car.

They also talked with Sandberg before he was flown to Boise.
