Council to discuss replacing Bryan

The Baker City Council’s Tuesday meeting includes a review of policies for replacing Councilor Andrew Bryan, as well as a resignation letter from Don Chance as the city’s contract planning director. Bryan resigned from the City Council May 28, and Chance submitted a letter of resignation dated June 1 stating he had completed the primary projects he and his company, Confluence Planning Services, were hired to do and that he felt the “city should pare back to a basic permit function in the planning department to conserve resources.” Tuesday’s meeting starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 1655 First St. Regarding the process for selecting a replacement for Bryan, the staff report says the Council may choose a replacement provided the resident is an elector and has been a resident of the city for at least 12 months prior to appointment. The appointee would serve the remaining seven months of Bryan’s term, which is up for election in November. As for Chance’s resignation, Chance recommended the city’s budget committee cut funding for his services during the June 1 committee meeting. That reduction for his contract planning services was reflected in a $40,000 cut to the city planning department budget included in the budget committee’s recommended budget that now advances to the City Council for final approval. In other business Tuesday, councilors will consider whether to approve the closure of several blocks downtown for the final day of the Elkhorn Classic Stage Race, which takes place June 18 through June 20. |
