County to hear update on Phillips perch problem

Baker City Herald

County commissioners will receive an update Wednesday from a committee appointed to help rid Phillips Reservoir of unwanted perch.

The committee's report, to be delivered by chair Frank Bishop, is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Wednesday during the regular meeting of the county commissioners. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. and will be held in commissioners' chambers at the Baker County Courthouse, 1995 Third St.

Bishop said his committee has been discussing the options available to decrease perch populations so that other species preferred by anglers, including trout, will be available at Phillips Reservoir.

The Baker County fishery has seen a marked decline in the number of anglers the past few years as perch populations have swelled. The perch, illegally introduced, have outcompeted other fish and now dominate the reservoir, much to the chagrin of fishing enthusiasts.

Options for reducing perch populations include extensive netting; the introduction of hybrid fish, including tiger trout, designed to outcompete the perch; and the possible introduction of perch-killing chemicals, including rotenone.
