Gourdgeous decorations downtown

Local artists donate their time and talent to carve jack-o’-lanterns that will be displayed downtown during Friday’s trick-or-treat event

Pumpkins are a perfect canvas, and all an artist needs is a good sharp knife to carve a masterpiece.

Well, maybe a marker, too, to get the design just right.

For Halloween, local artists gathered at the Short Term Gallery to create jack-o’-lanterns that will greet trick-or-treaters this Friday during the downtown event.

Yes — Friday. Historic Baker City’s annual downtown trick-or-treat will be Oct. 30, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. because some businesses aren’t open on Saturday.

This also means Main Street will be closed from Broadway to Auburn during that two-hour period Friday night.

And that’s not all — here’s a list of this weekend’s special events:

• The Baker City Kiwanis Club will be conducting a Halloween photo fundraiser from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. inside Basche-Sage Place, 2101 Main St. (inside the Broadway entrance).

Cost is $10 per exposure (includes two 5-by-7 prints). The prints will be available Nov. 2 at the Albertsons service counter. Proceeds from this event will help fund community service projects.

• Family festival at Calvary Baptist Church, 6 p.m. Friday at the church, corner of Third and Broadway streets.

This festival will feature chili, corn bread, goodies, hot cider, games, contests, a pumpkin puzzle and a hay ride. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes.

For more information, call Kelli at 523-9325 or Sarah at 523-4817.

• The Geiser Grand Hotel is hosting a “Ghosts and Legends” walking tour of the historic district.

Everything begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday with a dinner buffet at the hotel that also features a ghost-hunting presentation by the TAPS team from Boise (The International Paranormal Reporting Group).

After dinner there will be a nighttime walking tour of Baker City’s historic district and its ghostly legends, then its back to the hotel for dessert. Cost is $45 per person.

Saturday’s events include “The Inside Story” tour of the hotel at 3:30 p.m., and then a Geiser Ghost Trivia Contest from 7-9 p.m. For more information, call 541-523-1889.

• A “Wicked Ways Halloween Masquerade Ball” happens on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Baker Tower grand ballroom (corner of Main Street and Auburn Avenue).

The event features music, food, a “cash bar,” fortune tellers, photos and prizes for the best costumes. Costumes are required, and those attending must be 21 or older.

Tickets are $15 per person and available at The Record-Courier office, 1718 Main St., and online at www.BlackLyonPublishing.com and www.BakerHighlanders.org.
