A Washington woman died after she lost control of her car on the icy freeway Saturday afternoon and was struck by a semi-truck traveling behind her. Oregon State Police Sgt. Darin Helman said Jenna Lee Ulrich, 22, of Sammamish, Wash., died at the scene, about five miles north of Huntington. Helman said Ulrich was traveling east on Interstate 84 when she lost control of her 1982 Ford four-door sedan at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The car slid sideways into the center of the eastbound lanes where it was struck in the driver side by the truck. Ulrich’s passenger, Thomas Wayne Stroppel, 26, of Seattle, Wash., was taken by Huntington ambulance to Holy Rosary Medical Center at Ontario where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Helman said. No other information about his condition was available in time for this report. The truck driver, Lloyd Adam Knoblich, 51, of Colville, Wash., was not injured, Helman said. All three people were using safety restraints. The fast lane of travel was closed for about four hours Saturday during investigation and cleanup of the crash, Helman said. Baker City OSP troopers are continuing the investigation. Oregon Department of Transportation workers and Huntington emergency responders also assisted at the scene. |
