Idaho man killed in crash near Unity

Of the Baker City Herald

A Nampa, Idaho, man died Thursday afternoon in a one-vehicle rollover accident near Unity that also left two of his sons critically injured.

Nickolas Gutierrez, 40, was thrown through the windshield of the pickup truck he was driving, according to Oregon State Police. He was killed instantly when he was struck by the vehicle's right front wheel.

His sons, Isiah Gutierrez, 7, and Marcus Gutierrez, 14, were thrown through the vehicle's rear window. They were flown by Life Flight to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise with head injuries, according to police. No information about their conditions was available today.

Police said the accident happened at 12:49 p.m. Thursday on Highway 26 just east of Murray Reservoir about 10 miles east of Unity.

The 2000 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling west, toward Unity. Gutierrez was distracted by deer grazing in a field and the vehicle went off the south side of the road, police said. He overcorrected in an attempt to return the vehicle to the highway, causing it to roll several times.

Other passengers in the vehicle were Gutierrez's wife, Exiomara, 34; and their children, Angela, 13; and Lucas, 10. They were taken by Vale ambulance to Holy Rosary Medical Center in Ontario with minor injuries, police said.

None of the travelers was wearing a seat belt, according to police.
