Local video wins $15,000 for Geiser-Pollman Park play equipment

A video made by two Baker City women has won a $15,000 prize that will help pay for new playground equipment at Geiser-Pollman Park.

The video was one of five winners in a nationwide contest sponsored by Let’s Play, a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple Group designed to encourage kids to be active, and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit “dedicated to saving play for America’s children.”

Megan Fisher and Lisa Jacoby made the video, which featured kids playing at Geiser-Pollman Park, the largest of the city’s network of public parks.

The five winners were chosen by online voting during April.

The Baker City video finished fourth among the five winners, each of which received $15,000.

“This kind of support is what keeps our little towns alive. We’re so appreciative of everyone’s help in voting,” Fisher said.

The Baker City Playground Improvement Project has secured a $25,000 grant from the Leo Adler Foundation, which requires a match from the city.

The City Council endorsed the project in March, and Councilor Roger Coles suggested the city include the $25,000 in the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The Council will adopt a final budget in June.

The Baker City Lions Club is the nonprofit partner for PIP, which made it possible to apply for the Adler and Let’s Play grants.
