Man slips and shoots himself

Of the Baker City Herald

When a Baker City man slipped and accidentally shot himself in the leg with a pistol early Wednesday morning, he triggered a chain of events that landed him in jail upon release from the hospital.

Oregon State Police were called to investigate the accidental shooting after Travis Lee Weems, 29, was taken to the emergency room for treatment. Weems spent the night in the hospital and was arrested upon his release at 9:40 a.m. Thursday.

Police said Weems consented to a search of his clothing where they found a glass pipe containing methamphetamine. As a result, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Because he is a convicted felon, he also was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The pistol he was carrying and the ammunition also were taken into evidence.

As part of the investigation, police learned that Weems was wanted on a Wasco County warrant charging him with two counts of failure to appear on charges of possession of a controlled substance. Bail on those charges is set at $30,000.

Weems reportedly was walking from a cabin in the Pine Creek area to the road when he slipped in the mud. The .22-caliber handgun he was carrying discharged into his left leg near his groin. The bullet lodged behind his left knee.

He is being held at the Baker County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges today in circuit court, police said.
