Missing woman’s body found

Police believe Jacquelyn Breezi Jones, found in south Baker City, died from hypothermia

The body of a woman who police spent the past week searching for was found Friday in south Baker City, District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff said.

Preliminary results of an autopsy performed in Portland Saturday indicate that Jaquelyn Breezi Jones, 28, of Silverton, died of hypothermia, probably around the time she went missing on Feb. 26, Shirtcliff said.

Jones’ body was found on a parcel of private property near the south city limits.

The area is east of David Eccles Road.

Jones was reported missing Feb. 26 by her mother, Nancy Jones of Blackfoot, Idaho.

Jaquelyn Jones was last seen by a friend on Feb. 25 on a David Eccles Road property that’s about a quarter-mile from the place where a friend of hers, who was participating in the search, found her body at 3:25 p.m. on Friday, Shirtcliff said.

The Baker County Major Crime Team began investigating March 1 because of the suspicious nature of Jones’ disappearance, Shirtcliff said. Fliers were distributed seeking the public’s help in locating her.

When the search first began, Shirtcliff said investigators were unsure whether Jones had simply left the area, had wandered off or had been a crime victim.

“We’re still looking at toxicology results and other factors that may have led to her not being able to find shelter,” Shirtcliff said.

Temperatures dropped below 28 degrees in Baker City on all but one day between Feb. 26 and Friday.

At this point, however, neither the preliminary results of the autopsy nor the criminal investigation indicates foul play, he said.

Police first became involved with Jones on Feb. 22 when she wrecked her car on the freeway near Huntington after returning from a visit with her parents at Blackfoot. She was arrested on warrants charging her with a drug crime and failing to appear in Salem Municipal Court.

She was released from jail on Feb. 23 and traveled with a friend to the Cove area, where she spent a few days before returning to Baker City, Shirtcliff said.
