Motorcycle rider killed in crash

The Hells Canyon Motorcycle Rally was marred by the death of a  68-year-old Port Orchard, Wash., man who died after a head-on crash with another motorcyclist Saturday on the Idaho side of Hells Canyon.

John S. McCree, 68, was transported by LifeFlight to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise where he died of his injuries, according to an Idaho State Police press release issued Saturday.

The other rider, Anthony M. Weil, 51, of Lacey, Wash., was taken by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Medical Center-Baker City. No information about his condition was available in time for this report.

An ISP trooper responded to the crash at 1:30 p.m. It happened on the Idaho Power Co. road leading to Hells Canyon Dam in Adams County, Idaho, according to the press release.

Police said Weil was riding a 2009 Yamaha motorcycle that was traveling north on the paved Idaho Powder Co. road and McCree, who was driving a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle, was traveling south on the road. As they rounded a curve, police said Weil failed to maintain his lane of travel and the two motorcycles collided.

Both men were wearing helmets, police said, and it did not appear that weather or alcohol were factors in the crash.
