Produce sells well at Farmers Market

Saturdays initial Farmers Market drew about the number of vendors that organizers had hoped for 23 and way more customers than they could have dreamed of.
My very first customer cleaned me out of most of my diversity, said Pepper Nye of Halfway, who offered briefly onions, lettuce and broccoli. The produce always goes first.
Its made the whole week worthwhile, said Andi Sexton, a Master Gardener and one of the organizers, of Saturday mornings large crowd. People hear the music and stop. They socialize. One woman just came and bought flowers for her hotel room.
Lonnie Shurtleff provided the entertainment on his electric guitar, inviting members of the audience to join him. Carla Bailey took him up on his offer with a smooth vocal rendition of Crazy.
Im really pleased with the fact that the vendors are happy, said another organizer, May Heriza. Everybody seems to be doing well.
Heriza said that the community table, where individuals can sell their items in whatever quantity on consignment, is available every Saturday. The vendor need not be present, but can drop items off for sale as early as 8 a.m.
The event is held from 9 a.m. through 11 a.m. every Saturday through Sept. 29 in the parking lot of Western Bank, 2245 Main Street.
Upcoming events include the Baker Alternative Schools sale of hanging plants during the month of July, the Strawberry and Rhubarb Festival July 21, the Kids Festival Aug. 4 and the Harvest Festival Sept. 29.
Sexton said that two factors should help the Farmers Market expand a little each week for the next several weeks. One, of course, is that several produce items are coming into season. The other reason is more related to human nature, she said.
A lot of vendors came this week just to check us out, she said. They wanted to see if there were going to be enough customers. I think we proved the answer is yes.
