Robert Ott, the last local link to one of Baker High School’s greatest athletic accomplishments, has died.

Ott, 91, died Saturday at Settler’s Park.

He was one of the two surviving members of Baker’s 1938 state champion basketball team.

The other, Felton “Don” Huntsman, lives in Seattle.

Their teammate, Orville Ragsdale of Baker City, died on May 13, 2009.

Josephine (Gardner) Dickison, who also was a member of the BHS Class of 1938, said Ott was a popular student.

“He was one of the most loved boys in high school,” Dickison said this morning. “He was a great basketball player, and just a friend to everybody.”

Dickison said that although she wasn’t able to attend the championship game on March 19, 1938, when the Bulldogs beat Amity 27-18 in Salem, she remembers vividly the team’s triumphant return to Baker City.

“We met them halfway to Haines,” Dickison said. “There was music; it was a terrific celebration.”

Ott was a longtime employee at Ellingson Lumber Co.

He, along with his wife, Catharine, had the unique experience, five years ago, of watching as their great-grandson, Justin Grigg, and his Baker teammates won the school’s second state basketball championship.
