School, police team to arrest fugitive on N.C. warrant

A 19-year-old man is in custody today on a nationwide warrant charging him with statutory rape in North Carolina after Baker High School officials became suspicious when he attempted to register for classes.

Baker City Police arrested Brenton Lynch of Spring Lake, N.C., at 2:30 p.m. Thursday as he was walking at First and Madison streets, Sgt. Kirk McCormick said today.

The school called police because Lynch had no identification with him when he attempted to register, McCormick said. Officer Rand Weaver ran a check on him and discovered the North Carolina warrant.

McCormick said other officers were given a description of Lynch. While on patrol Thursday, Josh Bryant spotted Lynch and made the arrest.

“It was good work on the school’s part and good work on the officers’ part,” McCormick said.

Lynch will be returned to North Carolina, an indication that authorities in that jurisdiction were very interested in pursuing him, he said.

“It’s fairly serious, in these days of budget cuts, for them to come clear across the country for him,” McCormick added.
