Storm diminishes drought

May lived up to its reputation.

With a downpour.

Sunday’s series of showers deposited .4 of an inch of rain at the Baker City Airport, and brought a measure of relief to the area.

So far, 2013 has been distinguished by a lack of rain rather than a surplus.

This wouldn’t be the first year, though, that had a budding drought interrupted by a soggy late spring.

May, on average, is the wettest month in Baker City, with an average rainfall of 1.46 inches.

Sunday’s deluge didn’t quite push this May to that level, but at 1.29 inches this is the wettest month of 2013.

And the National Weather Service is forecasting a similarly damp storm for tonight and Tuesday, so it’s likely that May’s total will reach the long-term average.

Even so, the year is likely to enter June with a rainfall deficit. As of this morning, 2013’s total is 3.22 inches. That’s about 29 percent below average.
