Wow! What a wet Wednesday

Droughts don't end in one day.

But Wednesday made a yeoman's try.

By day's end, 1.57 inches of rain had fallen at the Baker City Airport.

It was the wettest day here in more than a quarter century — since 2.29 inches fell on Aug. 31, 1984.

That was the wettest day on record at the airport, where statistics date to 1943.

Wednesday ranks fifth on the one-day rainfall total list. The four others, besides Aug. 31, 1984, are from June 1958 (1.96 inches); May 1953 (1.65); and July 1982 (1.59).

Water damage was reported at the Baker Tower, at Main and Auburn in Baker City.

Gina Perkins, who works for the Baker County Economic Development Department on the fifth floor of the 10-story building, said a clogged drain on the roof apparently was the cause.

She said there was flooding on the eighth and ninth floors as well.

The office staff will be answering calls to 541-523-5460, Perkins said.

Wednesday was the first day with measurable rain at the airport in June, which on average is the second-wettest month.

Before the rain started, at about 5 a.m. Wednesday, the rainfall total for 2013 was 37 percent below average.

By the end of the day the deluge had trimmed the year's deficit to 9 percent.

On June 5 the Baker County Board of Commissioners declared a drought emergency.
