U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Sean Tomlinson, the son of Jim and Mary Tomlinson of Baker City, deployed to Afghanistan for a one-year tour of duty on July 19 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Tomlinson is an infantry platoon leader in the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 2nd Infantry Division, from Fort Lewis, Wash. He is stationed in the Kandahar province.

The SBCT’s mission is to provide security for the Afghan people for upcoming democratic elections, and to assist the Afghan government to build schools and infrastructure. Members will also help train Afghan police and soldiers.

Tomlinson is a 2003 Baker High School graduate and a 2008 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
