The Eastern Oregon University chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has nominated senior Story Nicole Miller to represent the chapter in 2007. The nomination enters Miller into a prestigious fellowship competition. Winners of the competition are eligible to receive up to $5,000 for graduate school.

Miller was inducted as a junior into Phi Kappa Phi, which invites only the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors for such recognition. She is one of 30,000 students in the nation to receive a nomination. She earned this national recognition through her outstanding academic achievement, honors projects related to education, leadership in restoring the EOU Pep Band, professional-quality geology scholarship, her work as a tutor for math, writing and Disabilities Services and as a geology teaching assistant.

The Richland, Ore., native credits her parents for helping her achieve such a high honor.

"They have always been supportive and pushed me to exceed the standard in everything that I do," she said.

Miller said that if she receives the fellowship it will indefinitely help her afford the cost of graduate school. She has already been admitted to EOU's Master of Teacher Education program. Teaching on a military base for the Department of Defense or teaching in rural Alaska are some of her future goals. She also hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics education, research new, innovative methods of teaching math and educate future teachers at the college level in order to help a wide range of children learn mathematics successfully.

Eastern Oregon University serves as an educational, cultural and scholarly center in

La Grande, Oregon, connecting the rural regions of the state to a wider world. Visit EOU on the Web at www.eou.edu.
