Haines man accused of assaulting his infant daughter

Gerald Dewayne Roe III, 19, is in jail in Boise, where his 2-month-old daughter, Mia Roe, is in critical condition

A Haines man is being held at the Ada County Jail in Boise on charges of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment of his 2-month-old daughter.

Baker County Major Crime Team detectives arrested Gerald Dewayne Roe III, 19, Tuesday in Boise.

His daughter, Mia Marie Roe, was flown there by air ambulance Monday for treatment at St. Luke’s Hospital, District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff said Wednesday.

First-degree assault is a Class A felony that carries a mandatory minimum 7fi-year prison term upon conviction. First-degree criminal mistreatment is a Class C felony.

The child is in critical condition with “severe head trauma consistent with abuse,” Shirtcliff said. The baby’s mother, Alicia Roe, 19, also of Haines, is not a suspect in the investigation, he said.

Gerald Roe was expected to be arraigned today in Boise. If he waives extradition, he would be returned to Baker County sometime next week, Shirtcliff said.

The investigation began Monday after Gerald Roe brought the baby, who was unresponsive at the time, to St. Elizabeth Health Services. Police were called because of the “suspicious nature” of the child’s injuries before she was flown to the Boise hospital, Shirtcliff said.

The district attorney expects to take the case before the grand jury next week. The Baker County Major Crime Team is continuing the investigation.
