Obituaries: Shirley Shaw, Pearl Roberts

Shirley Shaw

Shirley May Shaw, 75, also known by many as "Ma Shaw," died Sept. 26, 2006, at her home with her family by her side.

Shirley requested neither a service nor a memorial. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She was born and raised in California and moved with her family to Baker City in 1972. She considered Baker City her home.

Shirley loved and lived life to the fullest with her family and friends and acquaintances.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society through Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.

Pearl Roberts

Pearl J. Roberts, 88, a longtime Baker City resident, died Sept. 15, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the Assembly of God Church in Prairie City. Pastor Scott Holbert of the church will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Prairie City Cemetery. There will be a potluck at the church after the service.

Pearl Jane McConnell was born at Dayton, Wash., to Fred and Mattie McConnell. She was the oldest of three children. She graduated from high school at Starbuck, Wash., and then she and her sister graduated from business college at Spokane, Wash., before moving to the Susanville/Bates area.

Pearl married Charles Roberts. They had two boys, Randy and Cary. During their marriage, they lived at Bates; John Day; Omak, Wash.; and Baker City.

Pearl loved to travel and to bowl. She was a talented pianist and for several years she and Chuck were part of a combo that played for dances in the Prairie City-Bates area. She loved to drive and was always ready to jump in the car and drive to visit someone or just to see something different.

The family expressed a special thanks to her granddaughter, Kelly Linscott, and her niece, Marnie Jo Jones, for the tender loving care and time they spent with Pearl during her last years at Baker City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; her sister, Wanda Mitchell; her brother, Floyd (Cody) McConnell; a nephew, Terry Mitchell; and her son, Terry Roberts.

Survivors include her son Cary and his wife, Denise, of Omak, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Roberts of Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren, Michelle of McMinnville, Chris of Van Nuys, Calif., Misty of Omak, Wash., Kelly of Baker City, Aaron of Spokane, Wash., and Michael, serving in Iraq; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marnie McConnell; and nephews, Mike, and his wife, Sandy, and Bob and his wife, Gayanne Mitchell; and nieces, Marnie Jo and her husband, Ed Jones, and Marian and her husband, Richard Murrell.
