Wayne Hyde, Dorotha Miller, Herbert Hulse

Wayne Hyde

Wayne Hyde, 84, of Baker City, died April 14, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

At Wayne’s request there will be no funeral.

Wayne Jennings Hyde was born on Nov. 18, 1925, at Webster County, Mo., to Homer B. and Lois McMenus Hyde. Wayne was educated in Missouri and came to Oregon during World War II.

He worked in wholesale and retail businesses for 10 years. He then worked for the U. S. Forest Service for 30 years, retiring in 1983 as a forest fleet manager.

Wayne married Nell Savely in 1947. In 1949, their daughter Cherry Lee arrived. That marriage ended in 1952.

He married Juanita Campbell in 1970. She died in 1992.

His hobbies were fishing, gardening, stamp and coin collection and rodeos. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

Survivors include a daughter, Cherry Hedin of Portland; granddaughter, Kimberly Harney of Portland; sisters, Jane Rader and Arlene Davis of Marshfield, Mo.; brother, Jerry Hyde of Highland Park, Texas; stepson, Michael Campbell of Pendleton; and many devoted friends and neighbors in Baker City.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice through Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Dorotha Miller


Dorotha Ann Miller, 91, a former Baker City resident, died April 6, 2010, at her home in Eugene.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. Bill Walter and Ken Grafham of Calvary Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born Dorotha Ann Cloud on Feb. 27, 1919, at Baker City. She was the only daughter of Carl W. Cloud and Velma A. Long Cloud, who were longtime Baker City residents. Dorotha was educated in the Baker school system and was a 1937 Baker High School graduate. She worked as secretary for Baker High School after graduation.

Dorotha married Harvey Randall Miller, BHS Class of ’36), on Sept. 1, 1940, at Boise.

The couple lived at Baker City until the interruption of World War II, when they transferred to California where Harvey served as a flight instructor.

Dorotha enjoyed many of the activities that Baker City offered, especially taking a picnic lunch along while picking huckleberries. She taught Sunday School at Calvary Baptist Church with her mother, Velma Cloud, and grandmother, Daisy Long. She also enjoyed playing the piano.

Moving to Eugene in 1963, she began working at Sacred Heart hospital where she retired. She continued teaching Sunday School at the First Baptist Church for many years. In 1983, “Dot and Harv” enjoyed a Holy Land tour led by the pastor of their church.

Harvey died in June of 2005, just three months before the couple’s 65th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include her sons, John D. Miller and family of Philadelphia and Carl T. Miller and his family of Eugene; she had six grandchildren.

Herbert Hulse


Herbert Charles Hulse, 85, of Pasco, Wash., a former Halfway resident, died Jan. 2, 2010, at his home.

His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. Military rites will be conducted by members of the Halfway Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Oregon National Guard Honor Guard. Everyone is invited to the reception that will follow the ceremony at the VFW Hall.

Herb was born at Halfway to L. Charles and Josie Bassett Hulse on Dec. 10, 1924. He was raised in the Wallowa Mountains of Halfway. He grew up on a dairy and orchard farm and attended Halfway schools He was a Pine Valley High School graduate.

He met the love of his life, JoAnn Krigbaum at Halfway. After many love letters sent back and forth while he was in the U.S. Army during World War II, Herb and JoAnn were married on May 28, 1949. They were married for 58 years. Herb and JoAnn started their family and continued to work on the family farm while also working on the Brownlee and Oxbow dams.

The Hulse family moved to Burbank, Wash., in May 1959. They acquired a 150-acre farm, in Block 3 under the Homestead Act.

In 1971, they moved to a new farm and farmed in Block 17, until Herb retired from farming and continued to work with the South Columbia Irrigation District for another 20 years. Herb and JoAnn loved to go fishing and walking together to find many treasures (agate rocks and lost tools).

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn; his sisters, Mamie Jones, Vivian Ginther and Virgene Payton Fugit; and brother, Daryle Hulse.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John and Cynthia Hulse of Renton, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Rick Tosto of Kennewick, Wash., Joanie and Scott Thorne of Pasco, Wash., and Kristie and Mel Vaughn of Coos Bay; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Corene Hulse; brother-in-law, Phil (Mardi) Krigbaum; and sister-in-law, Lana (Jim) Sloan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW, Post 7847, through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814.
