La Grande, 1966-2014
Joseph Francis “Joe” Curtiss, 47, of La Grande, died April 11, 2014, at his home.
There will be a Celebration of Life service at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the 4-H Building at the Fairgrounds in La Grande. There will be a potluck afterward. For more information regarding the potluck, call Becky at 541-805-1585.
Joseph was born on June 24, 1966, at Baker City to Donald Lee Curtiss and Judith Ann Dickerson. Throughout his life, he made his home at Baker, La Grande, Gresham, and Hermiston in Oregon and at Boise, Idaho.
Spending much of his life in La Grande, Mr. Curtiss attended school at Riveria Elementary, La Grande Middle School, La Grande High School, and Eastern Oregon State College.
He was married to Terry J. Schiller for four years. Later, he found and married his true love, Sheral Curtiss. They spent 19 happy years together.
Joseph was employed as a construction worker. He eventually became disabled. He was enrolled in the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program.
Some of his favorite pastimes were camping, fishing, gardening, spending time with family, and just helping anybody and everybody who crossed his path, family members said. In high school he was on the wrestling squad.
Of course, he would have considered his greatest achievements to be his kids, grandkids and every other kid who had the privilege of being influenced by him, his family said.
Survivors include his wife, Sheral Curtiss of La Grande; children, Chelsie Curtiss, Matthew Curtiss, Becky Arant and her husband, Tyrel, Tony Whitemen, Jeremy Smith and Christopher Smith,all of La Grande, and Dawn Geoppinger and her husband, Dan, of Ohio; parents, Don and Nancy Curtiss of Baker City, and Judy Blevins and her husband, Bill, of La Grande; siblings, Teresa Curtiss, Jim and his wife, Janice, of Vancouver, Wash., and Michael Curtiss and John Curtiss, both of La Grande; 13 grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Curtiss Jr. and Mark Curtiss.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to help with the funeral expenses be made to the family in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande, OR 97850.
