Frances Davis


Frances Mae Cassity Davis, 78, of Parma, Idaho, a former Baker City resident, died April 20, 2009, at her home.

Her graveside funeral was Friday at Cloverdale Memorial Park in Nampa.

Frances was born on Oct. 26, 1930, at Nampa to Fleta Mae Goodwin Hiaring and George Carl Hiaring. She grew up at Nampa and attended Roosevelt Elementary and Central Junior High School.

Her father died in 1940 when she was 9. Her mother worked full time at Woolworth’s drug store to provide for the family. Frances was tasked with helping raise her two younger siblings while her mother worked.

Frances married Jack Angus Cassity Sr. in 1948. They were married for 39 years before his death. After Jack Sr. died, she moved to Boise and worked for the State of Idaho as the head cook for the Star and Eagle senior centers.

Francis married Jesse E. Davis in June of 1989. They would have celebrated their 20th anniversary this June.

Frances worked at the Idaho State Capitol Building as a telephone operator for several years. She worked at the Roadway Inn “Cock of the Walk Restaurant” for five years. She purchased and operated her own restaurant the “La Fondita” for several years in Boise.

She moved to Baker City in 1976 where she worked at the old St. Elizabeth Hospital as a dietary cook for two years. She later worked as a cook for the Blue and White Restaurant in Baker City for several years.

Frances loved fishing, working in her garden, camping, going to the rodeo and spending time with her husband and family.

Frances was an avid Mariners baseball fan, Boise State football fan and she never missed a televised game.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse E. Davis of Parma; brother, Carl Hiaring, and his wife, Evalyn, of Nampa; sister, Joyce Jester of Nampa; her sons, Jack Cassity Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of La Grande, Chris Cassity and his wife, Diane, of Russellville, Ky., and Phillip Cassity and his fiancee, Deanna, of Kuna, Idaho; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Fleta Hiaring; her first husband, Jack A. Cassity Jr.; and her daughter, Collette Anderson.

George Carroll Sr.


George W. Carroll, Sr., 88, of Baker City, died April 23, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Carroll’s funeral will be Tuesday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Major Shirley Kirk of The Salvation Army in Nampa, Idaho, will officiate. Visitations will be today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Chelan Abbey Mausoleum in Newport.

George was born May 8, 1920, in Jackson Hole, Wyo., to Hubert (Bert) L. and Lucy J. Carroll. He was the 10th child of a family of 13 children. He attended schools in Baker City from grade 5 through high school.

 He worked on various ranches while in school and after graduating. He worked in the round house in Huntington for Union Pacific Railroad from 1941 until he went in the Army for World War II in 1942. After the war, he worked various jobs including 1fi years with the Beatty Chapel, Oregon Lumber Company and Alison Fortner in Baker City.

In 1951 he went to work for Portland-Pendleton Freight Lines, which was later moved to Silver Wheel Freight Lines. In 1956, he was transferred to Newport as a working terminal manager where he worked for the next 31 years.  He retired in 1982 and moved back to Baker City in 1983.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union and a member of the National Rifle Association.

In 1941 he married Shirley L. Lynch in Baker City. She passed away in Dec. 5, 1982.

He served in World War II from May 1942 through Sept. 29, 1945 in the 3rd Army HQ and served overseas under General George Patton.  He served in the Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes campaigns.  He has decoration and citations for European, African, and Middle Eastern service medals — five battle stars, Sharpshooter Rifle M-1, good conduct medal and WWII Victory Medal.

He loved his family, the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, and getting firewood.

He is survived by his son, George W. Carroll, Jr. of Boardman; his daughters, Maryjane Harris of Reno, Nev., and Shirley L. Carroll of Clackamas; two sisters, Violet Graham and Lois Music, both of Baker City; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 6fi great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his wife; Shirley L. Carroll; his parents, Hubert L and Lucy J. Carroll; five brothers: Hubert Jr., Pat, Joe, Warren and Omar; five sisters: Daisy Suiter, Bertha Kline, Ada Talley, Pearl McClary and Lillie Ells; a grandson, Pahtriq Gairee Carroll; a granddaughter, Mickey Sue Carroll; and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Laura-Audrey Carroll.

JC Ward


JC Ward, 79, of  Baker City, died April 20, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Services in Baker City.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at the Local Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 975 S.  Bridge St. in Baker City. A reception will be held at the Community Connection Center at 2810 Cedar St. in Baker City immediately following the memorial service.

JC was born on June 22, 1929, in Brownsville, Texas, to Charles and Vera Ward. He graduated from Yakima High School in Yakima Wash.

JC met Vera Peggy Wilkins in Lewiston Idaho. They were married in 1952 in Weiser, Idaho. They moved to Baker City in 1962.

JC was a timber faller for many years and then became a homebuilder. JC never met a stranger and will always be remembered for having a smile on his face and always being the first one there to help anyone who was in need.

JC is survived by his wife, Vera of Baker City; a brother, Jesse Ward and his wife, Barbara, of Lewiston; and a sister, Ethel Dull and her husband, Joe, of Vancouver Wash.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Miriam Andes, Olera Workman and Inez Folks.
