Obituaries for April 28, 2009

Mary Anna Tipton

Mary Anna Tipton, 86 of Baker City, died April 23, 2009, at Roseburg.

Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Pastor Dave Deputy of the Calvary Baptist Church will officiate. Visitations will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Private interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mary Anna was born on Jan. 24, 1923, at Manteca, Calif. She was the youngest of five children. She attended schools at Manteca and upon graduation from Manteca High School, she attended Stockton Business College. Afterward she was employed by the Stockton Title Co. 

During her school years she loved to play tennis and go for rides on the back of her brother’s motorcycle. 

She married George Perry Tipton on April 24, 1946. They were married 57 years before her husband died in 2003. They had three sons: Tomas, William and Robert.

Some of her best times were of family vacations to the California coast and many camping trips to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in addition to family outings with her sisters and brother, nieces and nephews.

She was an excellent seamstress and knitted and crocheted most of her life. She also enjoyed going for walks, growing a garden and caring for her flowers.

In 1997, she and her husband moved to Baker City to be near their son. Upon moving to Baker City, she joined the Calvary Baptist Church and made many new friends. She was also able to spend a lot of time with her youngest granddaughter whom she truly enjoyed. 

Survivors include sons Tom Tipton and his wife, Linda, of Roseburg and Bill Tipton of Baker City; her sister, Alice Ingraham of Ashland, Ohio; three grandchildren, Chris Tipton, Katie Tipton and Julie Tipton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; son, Robert; sister, Margret; and brothers, Paul and Robert.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baker Calvary Baptist Church through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR, 97814.
