James D. “Jim” Elskamp, 67, a former longtime Baker City resident, died August 5, 2011, at his home in Portland.
His memorial service was Tuesday at the Omega Funeral Home in Portland.
Jim was born on May 3, 1944, at Baker City to Bette and Sam Elskamp. He married his high school sweetheart, Glenda Hallgarth, in 1961. They raised their two children in Baker City before they divorced.
Jim worked as a purchasing agent for Ellingson Lumber Co. for many years. In his young adult years, he was a drum major for the Baker Drum and Bugle Corps, a member of the Baker Jaycees and he also was active in the Elks Lodge. Thursday nights would find him golfing in the Twilight League at Baker Golf Club.
After leaving Baker City in 1985, he continued in the wood industry, working at Gold Beach Plywood on the Oregon Coast for a number of years. He recently retired from Alaskan Copper and Brass in Portland.
Jim was an avid sports follower and weather tracker. He loved the Oregon Coast and few could tell a joke better, family members said. He had immense love and pride for his family.
“He will be greatly missed and dearly remembered in the hearts of family and friends,” they added.
Survivors include his mother, Bette Elskamp of Portland; son, Chris Elskamp (Paula) of Clarkston, Wash.; daughter, Michele Cooper (Rick) of Beaverton; sisters, Denese Clark (Bruce) and Sammye Sanborn, both of Portland; grandchildren, Jacob, Natalie and Emily Elskamp of Clarkston, Wash., and Max Cooper of Beaverton; and several nephews and nieces.
Memorial contributions in the name of Jim Elskamp may be made to the Baker Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship Fund, Attn: Harvey Cookson, 1896 Second St., Baker City, OR 97814.
