Obituaries for Dec. 6, 2010
Michael Charles “Rusty” Welter, 60, died Oct. 21, 2010, at his home in Richland.
Interment will be scheduled in the spring of 2011 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Rusty, as he was known to his friends, grew up in Oregon. He lived at Vancouver, Wash., before moving to Richland two years ago.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Calvary during the Vietnam Conflict. He was proud to of his eight-year military service.
He loved his Oregon home with its bounty of fishing and hunting. When he returned from Vietnam, he took off for the mountains to live. Rusty worked as a logger and a fisherman, and for a time hooked up with lumberjacks and became their camp cook.
He enjoyed writing short stories as well as coming up with new and improved recipes, adding to his cooking expertise. He also had a talent for art and enjoyed drawing.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include many longtime friends who said “his passing has left a very big void in our lives, but we have memories and much laughter to see us through the dark days that lay ahead.”
