Obituaries for Feb. 3, 2012

Austin Coates

Austin H. Coates, 85, died Jan. 28, 2012, at North Powder.

Visitations will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and today and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave. His graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the North Powder Cemetery.  Friends are invited to join the family for a reception at the North Powder Grange Hall after the service.  Pastor Garth Johnson will officiate.

Austin was born on Aug. 29, 1926, at Allen, Okla., to Alfred and Grace Austin Coates. He attended school in North Powder and then became a butcher and warehouseman at North Powder Mill & Grain Co. Austin later married Alta Mae Pearson on Sept. 6, 1945, at Baker City.

 His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping and dancing. Austin belonged to both the Eagles Club and Elks Lodge. He was a simple man who cherished life, love family and friends, family members said.

Survivors include his sister, Betty Newman of Estacada; daughter Charlotte Allen of Longview, Wash.; son, Wayne Coates of Columbia, S.C.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

 He preceded in death by his wife, Alta Mae Coates, who died on Oct. 23, 1987; three sisters, Pauline Courtney, Allene Parker and Ulla Aldridge; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-laws.

 Memorial contributions may be made to Wolf Creek Grange or to the North Powder Senior Center through Grays West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
