Debra Slater, Mae Westerlund Debra Slater Debra Marie Kercheski Slater, 50, who grew up in Baker City, died Dec. 23, 2009. A celebration of her life will be scheduled later at Keizer. “Debra will be dearly missed and never forgotten,” her family members said. Survivors include her husband, Robert Slater; daughter, Bridet and Megan Duffy; son, Luke Duffy; mother, Suzanne Brown; brother, Rick Kercheski; twin sister, Donna Kercheski; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lenora and Jerry Gaub and Mary and Bob Prinslow; grandchildren, Pearl, Gabriella, Elena, Hailey and Julian; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Esther Mae Westerlund, 91, a longtime Baker City resident, died Dec. 29, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Services. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, Third and Broadway streets. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at Calvary Baptist Church. Mae was born at Page, Neb., to Andrew and Edna Cole. She married Harold Westerlund on April 29, 1939, at Taos, N.M. They spent many years living on the coast before moving to North Powder in 1942 and then to Baker City in 1945. She worked as a cook at the Inland Cafe for many years and she also drove school bus for several years. Survivors include her daughter, Esther Simrell, and her husband, Barry, of Milton-Freewater; son, Ernest Westerlund, and his wife, Wilma, of Mollala; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her daughter, Carol; her mother and father; and a sister and brother.
