Eunice White

Eunice Raye Welty White, 89, a former Baker City resident, died July 2, 2005, at San Pablo, Calif.

There will be a private family memorial service will at 3 p.m. Friday in Oakland, Calif.

Chapel of the Chimes funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Eunice Raye Welty White was born at Baker City on July 18, 1917. She was a 30-year resident of Richmond, Calif., and a 20-year resident of Georgetown, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse White of Joseph.

Eunice owned and ran The Knittery once located in the Shannon Knox House at Georgetown, Calif.

Survivors include her sister, Billie Johannson of Portland; and her nine children, Phillip (Vitauts Jaunarajs) of Denver, Mark of Reno, Nev., Steffani Lusk (Jimmy) of Hercules, Calif., Wilhelmina (Dave Rowney) of Redding, Calif., Michele Blevins (Harry) of Pascagoula, Miss., Victoria Calvin (John) of Atlanta, Nicklos (Frances) of Sacramento, Calif., Marian, also of Sacramento, and Jon (Carolyn) of Medford; nine grandchildren, James and Michael Lusk, Joshua and Aaron Green, Ana White, Brice White, Stephen and Richard White and Eric Blevins; and five great-granchildren.

Ardis Waters

Ardis E. Waters, 82, of Baker City, died July 8, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Pastor Bill Cox of McEwen Bible Fellowship will officiate. Vault interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Waters was born on Feb. 12, 1924, at Baker City to Glenn H. and Hattie Cole Ward of Hereford. She spent her early years on the Upper Burnt River and was a 1941 Hereford High School graduate. She later attended Baker Business College.

She worked for various businesses in Baker City and was employed by the U.S. Forest Service. Her favorite job was working for Rosa Krann, milliner, in 1961, which was Rosa's last year in business.

Mrs. Waters was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Baker County Garden Club, the Historical Society and Crossroads Arts Center.

She traveled briefly in seven foreign countries, but preferred the valleys, hills and mountains of Eastern Oregon. From a young age, she recorded the scenes and wildflowers with her camera. She sold or gave away numerous photos.

She was always thankful that her ancestors, as early as 1864, settled in Eastern Oregon. The Boyer family arrived at that time and the Cole family arrived in 1879.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Job N. Waters, who died in 1990; two infant sons; her grandparents, Charles and Fannie Boyer Cole of Hereford and O.D. and Elida Parsons Ward of Cleveland; her parents, Glenn H. and Hattie Ward; an infant sister, June La Velle Ward; and brothers, Ralph Cole Ward and Raymond G. Ward.

Survivors include her sons, John T. Waters of Denver and Robert C. Waters of Caldwell, Idaho, and his wife, Linda; her grandson, Mike Waters, and his wife, Shenoa; great-grandson, Garrett; and her sister and brother-in-law, Glenda and John Schaer of Corvallis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Berlyn Anderson

Berlyn Audrey Anderson, 2-year-old daughter of Caleb and Toby Anderson, died July 5, 2006.

Her graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. Visitations will be from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock tonight at the Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Berlyn was born on April 9, 2004, at Chico, Calif. Her mother, Toby, is a former Baker City resident.

Survivors include her parents, Caleb and Toby Anderson; brother, Cole Anderson; grandmother Debra Anderson; grandparents, Ruben and Joan Montoya, Paul and Sheila Anderson and Kelly and Georgia Brown; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends who loved and treasured her in life and are now grieving her loss.

Memorial contributions may be made in Berlyn's name in care of the funeral home.

D.H. ‘Pete' Petry

Durward Howard Petry, 70, of Baker City, died July 10, 2006, at his home.

His memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave. Pastor Lennie Spooner of the First Church of the Nazarene will officiate. There will be a reception afterward at the home of Jeff Petry.

Durward was born on Feb. 20, 1936, at Seattle, Wash., to George D. and Margaret J. Petry. He graduated from high school in 1954 at Richland, Wash., and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve. He moved to Baker City in 1956, where he served in the Army National Guard of Oregon and met his wife, Joan Searles. They were married on Nov. 23, 1956.

Pete had a distinguished career and an exciting life. He served on the Baker Police Force from 1959 to 1973. He resigned from the police force as a detective sergeant in 1973 to become a welfare investigator for the State of Oregon. He worked in that position until his retirement in 1995. After retirement, the Petrys enjoyed winters at Parker, Ariz., with good friends.

Durward enjoyed many years of public service and was elected as the president of the Oregon Public Employees Union (OPEU) from 1981 to 1985 and served on the board for 16 years. He loved OPEU and was proud that he broke a long tradition that all previous presidents had been from Salem. In 1986, he was asked to return and served another three years as president.

Durward loved the outdoors, especially snowmobiling, four-wheeling and gardening. He was happiest when spending time with his family, grandchildren and closest friends. He took particular joy and pride in the accomplishments of his family, including his younger brother, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joan; his children, Cindy Marie and her husband, Steve McLean, Tammy Joanne Rino, Jeffery Durward and his wife, Carol Petry, all of Baker City, and Kimberly Kaye Knaus, who has served for 25 years in the U.S. Navy; 10 grandchildren, Gregory, Hilary and Peggy McLean, Ashley, Anthony and Alyson Rino, Jerame and Courtney Petry and Karissa and Kasey Knaus; a brother, Larry, and his wife, Nita Petry, and their children, Thomas and Traci of Renton, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George D. and Margaret Petry.

‘Kay' Bailey

Catherine Kay "Kay" Clark Bailey, 59, of Denver, a former Baker City resident, died July 5, 2006, at her home.

Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Baker City Christian Church, 675 Highway 7. Pastor Roger Scovil of the church will officiate. There will be a reception afterward at the church. Inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Kay was born at Weiser, Idaho, on May 6, 1947, and grew up in Eastern Oregon. She was a 1965 Baker High School graduate and earned her bachelor's degree from Eastern Oregon College (now Eastern Oregon University) at La Grande in 1969.

As a young girl, she was an accomplished horseperson, earning the titles of princess and queen in various rodeos. She was always active in 4-H.

Starting as a telephone operator in her senior year of high school, she advanced to senior project manager at Telcordia Communications before her retirement in May 2001.

Kay was very athletic her entire life. A competitive bodybuilder in her 30s, she won multiple awards. Later, after moving to Colorado, she discovered a love for long-distance biking as well as skiing.

Kay will be remembered for her kind and giving nature as well as for her sense of humor and love of children.

Survivors include her mother, Ruth Clark Ballo of Baker City; her fiance, Bruce Lew of Denver; her son, Joe, and his wife, Dina, and their daughter, Natalie, of New Jersey; her sisters, Darlene Wendt, and her husband, Charles, of Federal Way, Wash., and Arlene Schoorl and her husband, Rex, of Unity; and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dale Clark of Baker City.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Lance Armstrong Foundation through Gray's West & Co., 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.

Georgie Laird

Georgie Neoma Laird, 77, of Aloha, a former Halfway resident, died July 9, 2006, at Beaverton.

Her memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pine Baptist Church at Halfway. Pastor Bill Shields will officiate. Visitations will be for family only. Burial will be at the Pine Haven Cemetery in Halfway. There will be a gathering for family and friends after the service at the home of Rob and Denise Laird at 1380 D St.

Georgie was born on June 20, 1929, at Roy, N.M., to George and Oma Jackson. She was raised at Albuquerque, N.M. She moved with her family to Halfway in 1944. She married her husband, Robert P. Laird, in 1945, and worked the family ranch. Bob died in 1985.

Georgie moved to Beaverton a short time later to be close to her family. She enjoyed her grandchildren and was adored by them. She will truly be missed by all who loved her.

She also was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Laird; and a grandson, Jason Laird.

Survivors include her sons, Rob Laird, and his wife, Denise, and Reggie Laird and his wife, Sylvania; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children through Coles Funeral Home, 1950 Place St., Baker City, OR 97814.

Don Dima

Don Marion Dima, 67, of Baker City, died July 9, 2006, in the Wallowa Mountains.

His graveside funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland. Pastor Gordon Bond of the Richland Christian Church will officiate.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1938, at Morgan Creek on the Snake River to John and Eunice Dima. As a young child, he lived with his parents, older sisters and brother on the Snake River. After various moves, the family settled in Baker Valley on Pocahontas Road. These two places are where Don's fondest memories were created.

He lived in Baker County all of his life, working first in road construction and then as a log truck driver. He eventually starting driving as a long-haul carrier both cross-country and regionally.

He married his wife, Wanda, on July 29, 1995, at Baker City. He enjoyed sharing his love of the mountains with friends and family by taking them on interesting — and sometimes exciting — excursions. His knowledge of the mountains and hunting developed into many entertaining conversations.

He also enjoyed traveling with Wanda and discovering new and fun things to do. Acting on the romantic side of his character, it gave him great pleasure to send flowers or to find the right gift.

He took extra effort to make time and to provide for his children, to guide and direct their lives, to teach and to show them new places. He was always there to listen and to give his opinion. His guidance will be deeply missed.

Don was happiest when surrounded by friends and family. He was always there to help out, to visit, to entertain and placed great importance on hospitality.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda; two children, Linda DeRoest of Baker City and John W. Dima of Weston; Wanda's children, Sandy Hulen and her husband, Darrell, of Bend, Brian Fosnaugh of Portland and six stepchildren; grandchildren, Josh Rush, Nick Rush, Chris Rush, Amber Dima, Ashley Dima, Dennis Dima and Jett Hulen; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Richmond of Baker City; and many close friends and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eunice Dima; a sister, Laura Crapo; and a brother, John Dima.
