Obituaries for July 17, 2009

Polly Spangler

Pauline F. (Polly) Spangler, 91, a former Baker City resident, died July 14, 2009, at a local care facility in Boise.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett, Idaho, and internment will be at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise.

Polly was born April 22, 1918, in Sparta, to Clyde and Elizabeth Macy. She grew up and attended schools in Baker City.

In the 1940s she worked at the Portland shipyards and after Pearl Harbor followed in her three brothers’ military footsteps by joining the Navy in 1943. Her basic training took place at Hunter College in New York City and she was stationed at the Pasco, Wash., Navy Air Base.

She married Bob Spangler in 1948, and was a stay-at-home mom. In the 1970s she worked for Buttery Stores as a cashier and retired 10 years later. She traveled through Europe and to Mexico. Throughout the years, she enjoyed puttering in her vegetable and flower gardens and bowled in leagues for over 40 years, well into her 80s.

She is survived by her children: Steve and Janet Elam, Suzie Lorenz, and Kelli and Steve Jones; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her dogs, Sammy and Sissy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; and her siblings, Gladys, Johnny and Bill.

Sandra Golden

Sandra Gene Golden, 66, died July 9, 2009, at Evergreen Vista in La Grande.

Sandra was born June 6, 1943, to Betty and Robert Wright in Oak Park, Ill. She was the oldest of five girls. She moved to Southern California with her family in 1955. She graduated from John Muir High School in Pasadena, and the University of California at Santa Barbara with a bachelor of science degree in zoology. She worked as a laboratory technician, and later obtained a master's degree in laboratory management and was supervisor of the lab in a 1,200-bed hospital in Long Beach, Calif.

She raised Benjamin and Sarah as a single mom after an eight-year marriage which ended in divorce.

She met Tommy Golden at the hospital laboratory and married him in 2002. They moved to Texas, his home state, to be near his family. In her early 50s she developed Pick's Disease, a rare form of progressive dementia. When her care became overwhelming, she was brought to Oregon and placed in Settler's Park for care after a short stay with her sister. She later was moved to Evergreen Vista where she suddenly passed away July 9, 2009.

Sandy was intelligent, kind and giving. She was an expert seamstress. She made her wedding dress and all four bridesmaids dresses (for her four sisters). She never forgot a birthday or a holiday and made sure all gathered for an occasion, usually as hostess. She was nurturing to her family, and if there were problems, she tried to help. She loved travel, shop, read,  sew and fast cars! She had a great sense of humor and a warm, winning smile.

She is survived by her two children: Benjamin Louis Doty of Seattle, and Sarah Gretchen Plamer of Wilton, N.H.; and her sisters, Judy Harmer of Baker City, Nanci Sheppard of Baker City, Wendy Wright of Duarte, Calif., and Christy Gordon of Temple City, Calif.

Kim Carpenter

Kim Carpenter (McLaughlin), 52, of Baker City, died July 13, 2009.

Her memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18 at Gray’s West & Company Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. A luncheon will follow at the Eagles Club, 2935 H St., beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Kim was born Dec. 12, 1956, to Don McLaughlin and Joyce (McLaughlin) Aldrich, in Pensacola, Fla. Her family moved to Baker in 1972 where she met the love of her life, Samuel Carpenter Sr. The couple were married on Sept. 19, 1984, blending their families together.  Kim had two children, Chrissy and Steven, and Sam Sr. had two children, Dollie and Sam Jr.

Kim lived a wonderful life, full of endless memories with family and friends. She always had a smile on her face. She was the “Rock” who held us all together. She was our confidante, shoulder to lean on and most important, our best friend.  To know her was to love her.

She enjoyed softball, traveling, games and times full of laughs with friends and family.

Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Sam Carpenter Sr.; her mother, Joyce Aldrich; her sisters, Carla Price and husband John, and Karen Hensley; her brothers, Kenny McLaughlin and wife Karen, and Robert Aldrich; her children, Steve Connor and his wife Keri, Chrissy Connor, Sam Carpenter Jr. and his wife Michelle, and Dollie Robertson; and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and grandchildren whom she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her father, Don McLaughlin; grandmother, Myrtle Aldrich; and an aunt, Clarice Beach.

She will be missed by too many to list. To our wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, grandma and most of all our best friend, we all love you and will miss you very much.  Smiles to heaven until we meet again.

Because Kim loved children with the utmost part of her heart, donations in her memory may be made to any children’s hospital in lieu of flowers. This may be done through Gray’s West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City, OR 97814.
